New York Mayor-elect Reacts to Australian Hanukkah Attacks
New York’s mayor-elect, Zoran Mamdani, has strongly condemned the recent attacks during a Hanukkah celebration in Australia, labeling them a “despicable act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” He has promised to work towards ensuring the safety of Jewish New Yorkers.
Mamdani’s remarks came following a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney that resulted in at least 15 fatalities and numerous injuries. Local authorities have classified the incident as a terrorist act aimed at the Jewish community.
“A Jewish community has been devastated by grief and sorrow; a holiday meant to bring light has instead turned into a day of darkness,” he stated. “This attack exemplifies a terrifying trend of violence directed at Jews globally.”
The incident has raised questions about whether warnings regarding such acts were overlooked.
It’s noteworthy that Mamdani, who made history as the first Muslim mayor of New York City, has faced scrutiny over his previous hesitance to denounce the term “globalization of the intifada,” which has been interpreted as inciting violence against Jews.
After a resounding win in the Democratic mayoral primary last June, which generated significant political waves, he shared that he felt “discouraged” from using certain terms regarding the conflict, which many consider incendiary.
The attack occurred during a public Hanukkah event, with police reports indicating that the suspected assailants were a father-son duo. While the father was killed at the scene, the son was critically injured after being shot by law enforcement.
Among the victims was Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who was closely connected to the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, notable for its large Hasidic Jewish community. Rabbi Schlanger had recently advocated for increased support for Israel through a letter to the Australian Prime Minister.
Mamdani declared, “If I take office, my daily focus will be on safeguarding Jewish New Yorkers wherever they may be—in the streets, on the subway, every moment.” He expressed a vision for this safety concern to unite all New Yorkers, aiming to eradicate such dreadful violence from the community.
His statements, including a video posted on social media, garnered significant attention, amassing over 4 million views across various platforms by early Monday afternoon.
