Mamdani dodges voter ID inquiry, references federal law regarding payment for snow removal.

Mayor Mamdani on Snow Shoveling ID Requirement

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani faced questions on Monday regarding the city’s requirement for two forms of identification to get paid for snow shoveling while, paradoxically, there’s no ID needed to vote. He responded that he was simply adhering to the law.

During an exchange with CNN’s Jake Tapper, a House Republican’s social media post was highlighted, which questioned why the city demands ID for shoveling but not for voting. Mamdani stated, “Here in New York City, we follow the law. In order to get paid for this type of work, it’s a federal requirement to present certain IDs. We ask for two pieces of identification. This protocol has been in place for many years, and thanks to the hard work of the Department of Sanitation, we’ve increased our capacity to supervise up to 1,800 workers per shift.”

However, he did not directly address the issue regarding voter identification.

Recently, many Democrats have expressed their objections to the Republican Party’s proposed Protection of American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE), which mandates ID for voting, likening it to “Jim Crow 2.0.”

Tapper also inquired about former President Trump’s remarks concerning the snow shoveling initiative. Trump commented, “It’s really crazy. The mayor of New York is a very nice guy, though his ideology isn’t all that great. We’re in the midst of a significant snowstorm, and I heard he’s asking people to help shovel snow. Okay, get a shovel and start shoveling snow. What the heck. I might not contribute much, but I can help.”

When Tapper asked about Trump’s perceived disregard for the snow shoveling initiative and their communication frequency, Mamdani kept it vague. He said, “I keep these conversations private. Conversations in the past, including those in the Oval Office, have primarily focused on New York City and how to ensure support for our city.”

Mamdani noted that the emergency snow plow program allows sanitation workers to operate plows and salt spreaders, asserting, “This program enables our workers to efficiently manage snow removal, helping spread around 50 million pounds of salt. This means our snow plows are significantly supporting the city’s operations.”
