Mamdani’s Campaign Taps into Wealth Perspectives
Zohran Mamdani’s campaign recently responded to articles highlighting the sentiments of wealthy individuals toward the Democratic mayoral candidate in New York City. They enlisted the help of “The Gilded Age” star to deliver a “dramatic reading” of these articles.
In videos Mamdani shared on Monday, actor Morgan Spector, who portrays railroad tycoon George Russell in the HBO series set in the late 1800s, is depicted as continuing a rich lifestyle in New York. He reads excerpts from a New York Times piece published last month, posing the question, “How are you so rich about the next mayor of New York?”
“August in the Hamptons: Ocean breeze. Overregister at Tracy Anderson’s class. The parking lot misery. New York City’s mayoral elections are just around the corner this fall,” Spector recited.
He adds, “Even the overpriced lobster salad doesn’t seem to lift spirits,” referencing quotes from the political fundraiser that appeared in the Times.
Spector noted the discussion revolves around whether former governor Andrew M. Cuomo or Mayor Eric Adams can outpace democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani.
He recalled, “In June, he boldly stated, ‘Meet the Press’,” as he looked directly into the camera and took a dramatic sip.
On the state of the mayoral race, Spector remarked, “The Hamptons are basically in a state of group therapy.”
He further commented, “In short, the monetary elite are in a panic.”
Spector had previously expressed admiration for Mamdani, calling him a “great candidate” prior to his official nomination as the Democratic contender for New York City Mayor in July. “He seems like a candidate who could have an exceptional future as a left-leaning politician,” Spector noted in an interview with Rolling Stone.
On another note, former President Trump hasn’t held back his criticism of Mamdani, referring to him as a “communist madman,” labeling him a democratic socialist in the process.
