New York City Mayoral Candidate Zoran Mamdani’s Campaign Contributions
Recent campaign finance disclosures indicate that Zoran Mamdani, a candidate for New York City mayor, made a significant donation of over $28,000 to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York City last month. The DSA has expressed its eagerness to influence Mamdani’s policies should he be elected.
On September 15, Mamdani’s campaign submitted a payment of $28,677.57 to the New York branch of the DSA, specifying “Other: Exploitation/Text Messages” as the reason for the payment. Prior to this, his campaign had made smaller payments totaling around $3,000 for various fundraising efforts, but this recent donation stands out as the most substantial since his campaign’s inception. In fact, since early 2025, NYC-DSA has received 36 individual payments from Mamdani’s campaign, accumulating to over $33,000.
This donation is notable as DSA representatives have publicly affirmed their growing influence over Mamdani’s campaign platform.
Mamdani’s Stance and Connections with DSA
Mamdani, who sometimes brushes off claims that he is “absolutely communist,” has a track record that suggests closer ties with the DSA. Experts also seem to agree. In a July panel discussion, it was reported that DSA members have been deeply involved with Mamdani’s campaign and had a hand in crafting elements of his platform. Daniel Goulden, a DSA organizer, mentioned that their collaboration places them in a favorable position to “seize state power.” He emphasized how close the relationship is, noting that “DSA meets regularly with him,” and his campaign staff has included friends and allies from the organization.
The DSA is particularly influencing Mamdani’s stance on “trans rights,” advocating for the use of city resources to provide free transgender healthcare nationwide. Goulden elaborated on this by stating that they aim to utilize New York City’s power to offer gender-affirming services not just for local residents, but for people across the country.
Darren Goldner, the chapter’s president, stated, “The candidates we support are expected to align with our members’ values.” This suggests an ongoing commitment to solidarity between Mamdani and the organization.
Recently, at a DSA event, group leaders hailed their symbiotic relationship with Mamdani, asserting their plan to maintain this connection even if he is elected.
Back in 2021, Mamdani expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the DSA, especially its New York chapter, highlighting issues like the anti-Israel boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement as crucial topics for building support.
Mamdani believes he can tackle New York City’s housing crisis by implementing a rent freeze for the over 2 million residents living in rent-stabilized units, which aligns with DSA’s Housing Justice Platform. His campaign website emphasizes the need for affordable living, advocating for free childcare, and public transportation improvements as part of his mayoral bid.
A closer look at Mamdani’s campaign reveals that several staff members are actively engaged with the DSA, including Tasha Van Auken, his field director, who was compensated over $100,000 in July 2025. Van Auken noted that Mamdani’s campaign adopted strategies from the DSA, focusing on building leadership and infrastructure in the early stages before moving into aggressive outreach.
Eliana Bisgard-Church, Mamdani’s campaign manager during the primaries, also shares a background with the DSA, often collaborating with key leaders from the organization. The connection appears to run deep, with both Bisgard-Church and Mamdani meeting weekly with DSA co-chairs.
Through direct outreach efforts specifically aimed at younger voters, Mamdani’s campaign seems keen on galvanizing support, reflecting the active role of the DSA in facilitating logistics and strategies to maximize voter turnout.
Fox News Digital has made attempts to connect with both Mamdani’s campaign and the NYC-DSA for further comment.
