Zohran Mamdani Plans Outreach to Trump Before Taking Office

New York City’s Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, has announced his intention to communicate with President Donald Trump prior to his inauguration in January, emphasizing that a strong relationship with the White House is crucial for the city’s future.

In a recent interview, Mamdani, identifying as a Democratic socialist, expressed his commitment to proactively discourage the sending of ICE agents or the National Guard to New York City by the Trump administration.

“I will be reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city,” he noted.

Mamdani also suggested a willingness to work with Trump on reducing the cost of living, despite their differing viewpoints.

“[If] President Trump wants to speak about lowering the cost of living or delivering cheaper groceries, like he ran on [in 2024], I’m there to have that conversation,” he stated.

“I’m here to work for the benefit of everyone that calls the city home, and that wherever there is a possibility for working together toward that end, I’m ready. However, if [Trump’s policies] come at the expense of New Yorkers, I will fight back.”

President Trump has previously remarked that providing federal funding to New York City under a mayor like Mamdani would be challenging, arguing that “if you have a communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.”

Following Mamdani’s election victory, Trump expressed hopes for his success, citing his love for the city while also warning that Mamdani should maintain a respectful approach toward the federal government.

“Look, for a thousand years, communism has not worked,” Trump commented. “It’s just that communism, or the concept of communism, has not worked. I tend to doubt it’s going to work this time. … It’s literally never worked.”

In the midst of all this, political tensions linger, and Mamdani’s approach to governance will soon be put to the test as he prepares to take on the challenges ahead.
