Mamdani shares video instructing undocumented individuals on avoiding ICE: ‘We can all resist ICE’

New York City Mayor-Elect Advises Undocumented Immigrants

Zoran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, recently put out a video aimed at undocumented immigrants, sharing tips on how to avoid U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. He emphasized a commitment to oppose the federal government’s extensive deportation efforts.

The bilingual video, available in both English and Spanish, was shared on social media, with the message to “know your rights.” This comes in light of a recent ICE operation on Canal Street, during which Mamdani asserted, “We will protect the rights of every New Yorker, which includes over 3 million immigrants living here.” He implied that even lawful immigrants might feel at risk of deportation.

“Everyone can stand up to ICE if we understand our rights,” he stated, offering advice for individuals interacting with immigration officials.

“ICE cannot enter private areas—like homes, schools, or workplaces—without a judge’s warrant,” Mamdani clarified. “If they lack a judicial warrant, you have the right to say, ‘I do not consent to entry,’ and keep the door shut.”

Mamdani cautioned that ICE may try to use non-legal documents instead of actual warrants, reminding viewers, “ICE can mislead you. Remember, you can remain silent. If detained, just ask, ‘Am I free to go?'” He suggested repeating that question until they provide an answer.

He also noted that individuals have the legal right to photograph ICE agents, provided it doesn’t interfere with an arrest.

“New Yorkers have a constitutional right to protest, and I will safeguard that if I become mayor. This city will always be a refuge for immigrants, and I will work tirelessly to protect and celebrate our immigrant friends and neighbors,” he added.

However, it’s crucial to point out that undocumented individuals cannot legally escape a valid ICE arrest, nor can they resist once in custody. Federal laws mandate the deportation of those without legal status. Sanctuary policies do not override federal laws regarding flight or resistance during lawful arrests or exempt illegal immigrants from deportation according to the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Mamdani’s renewed push against President Trump’s deportation agenda follows a surprisingly amicable encounter with the president in the Oval Office last month, where they both expressed a desire for a safer and more affordable New York City.

During their conversation, Trump expressed his belief that Mamdani would be a “really great mayor.”

“I told the president directly that New Yorkers want to adhere to our city laws. Our Sanctuary City Policy allows the city to contact federal authorities in cases involving approximately 170 serious crimes,” Mamdani reported at a local church in the Bronx last month.
