Mayor Zoran Mamdani Boycotts Israel Day Parade

In a historic move, Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist and anti-Zionist, has opted out of the Israel Day Parade, making him the first New York mayor to do so since the event began in 1964.

During a security briefing for the parade, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined Mamdani to outline extensive safety measures for participants. She emphasized that this year’s security plan is unprecedented, detailing an increased police presence and heavy weapons teams monitoring the event.

Critics have pointed out that despite his decision to boycott the parade, Mamdani could have shown support for Jewish New Yorkers without endorsing the current Israeli government. Addressing these concerns, he reiterated his stance from his campaign, stating he would refrain from participating and made his views on the Israeli government abundantly clear.

Mamdani underscored his responsibility to ensure the safety and health of all New Yorkers, regardless of whether he attends events himself.

The Israel Day Parade, formally recognized as the 5th Israel Day, is the largest rally in support of Israel globally. For over six decades, mayors from Robert F. Wagner Jr. to Eric Adams have participated, attracting tens of thousands each year. This year’s theme highlights a strong pro-American sentiment, proclaiming, “Proud American, Proud Zionist,” reflected in the abundance of American and Israeli flags along Fifth Avenue.

Mamdani’s decision comes amidst an alarming rise in anti-Semitic incidents in New York, which accounted for a significant percentage of hate crimes reported last month. Several anti-Israel protests, some organized by Mamdani himself, have occurred outside synagogues and Jewish institutions recently.

Interestingly, skipping cultural festivities is not typical for Mamdani. He participated in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and has attended other parades, demonstrating a willingness to engage with diverse communities.

In March, he appeared in the Lunar New Year parade alongside New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. Last year, he took part in various celebrations, including Puerto Rico Day, India Day, and Pakistan Independence Day.

Mamdani made headlines for being the first mayor to address the International Workers’ Day rally on May 1st, showing his dedication to social causes.

Notable figures like Governor Hochul and Senator Chuck Schumer are expected at the Israel Parade, along with former mayors and key political figures. Criticism of Mamdani’s absence has been vocal, with some, like Congressman Mike Lawler, calling it disgraceful, especially given New York City’s significant Jewish population.

Eric Goldstein, a prominent leader from the UJA Federation, articulated that Mamdani’s refusal to attend the parade represents a broader rejection of the Jewish community’s right to self-determination and will be remembered for its implications.
