Political Dynamics in NYC: Mamdani and Hochul at Forest Hills Rally
New York City mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani spoke in defense of Governor Kathy Hochul after a rally in Forest Hills on Sunday, where her supporters were drowned out by chants demanding “taxes on the rich!”
Mamdani’s proposed tax increases on corporations and the wealthiest New Yorkers are integral to his ambitious agenda, which includes free child care and city-operated grocery stores. However, state approval is essential for such tax changes, and the governor has made it clear she is not in favor of raising taxes.
“When I speak with the governor, we focus on affordability. We both share the aim of achieving that,” Mamdani noted during a press conference in Manhattan.
Despite Mamdani’s efforts, his supporters interrupted Hochul’s speech with chants, prompting him to step in early and show solidarity with her by holding her hand.
Mamdani’s Online Backlash
Following the rally, some criticized Mamdani online, calling his support for Hochul “humiliating.”
Amid the uproar, Hochul acknowledged the crowd’s passion for tax reform but emphasized her role as a party leader, stating she attended to show support for Mamdani.
“What I saw in that stadium was invigorating. It reassured me that we can work together for the people,” Hochul stated.
Mamdani participated in the rally alongside prominent figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, which attracted over 10,000 attendees, according to his campaign reports.
When questioned about the tax increase discussions, Hochul responded with a vague, “We’re talking a lot about everything,” implying a need to focus on the upcoming election first.
She also expressed confusion over the chants, mentioning she thought they were cheering for the Buffalo Bills instead.
Mamdani’s Support for the Governor
Despite the discord, Mamdani expressed appreciation for Hochul’s statements made during the rally. He clarified his intent to unify, stating, “This relationship doesn’t have to mirror what it was like with Andrew Cuomo. It can be about mutual support for our constituents.”
As Election Day approaches, Mamdani holds a solid lead over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, currently polling at 44%, while Cuomo, an independent candidate, stands at 34%.
Hochul, who previously withheld her support for Mamdani, is now firmly backing him in his mayoral campaign, although Mamdani has been hesitant about reciprocating support for her re-election efforts.
Criticism from Opponents
Representative Elise Stefanik has characterized the rally as a significant misstep for Hochul, labeling her as “the worst governor in America” and predicting that voters will reject her in the next election.
