A 33-year-old man was stabbed and robbed during a confrontation over food in Washington Square Park late Wednesday, police said.
Authorities say the victim was on the north side of the iconic Greenwich Village park around 9:30 p.m. when the altercation began.
Police said the assailant stabbed a park visitor in the back with a knife and then stole his backpack.
Police say the fight was related to food, but they don’t have any further details about the exact circumstances.
It is unclear whether the victim knew the assailant.
The suspect fled and had not been caught by Thursday morning.
According to the latest data from the NYPD, overall felony crime in the 6th Precinct, which covers Greenwich Village and the West Village, including the park, is down about 16% so far this year.
Notably, felony assault cases are down about 24% so far this year compared to the same period last year.
