A 45-year-old man shot and killed seven family members and a family friend in a Pennsylvania home on Friday, according to police reports.
The shooter then took his own life. Details about his identity have not been released yet. Among the victims was a woman who was eight months pregnant, as indicated by police in a news conference.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah stated that the gunman was related to seven of the deceased individuals, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant victim. The police haven’t disclosed the names of those who were killed.
A grieving father, whose 1-year-old daughter was among the victims, mentioned to the press that the man was a grandfather who always appeared calm. “I think he was putting on a front,” Julius Windham remarked at a memorial, pointing out the contrast with the gunman’s demeanor. “You would think…something like this would never happen,” he added.
Mourners gathered outside the family home, laying candles, flowers, and stuffed animals in memory of those lost. Windham wore a T-shirt bearing images of the victims and the phrase “Forever In My Heart.” He expressed his grief, stating, “Words can’t even explain what I’m going through right now. But I’ve got to be strong for my community, for my family, my daughters, my sons, everybody.”
Chief Lorah mentioned that investigators found audio recordings that included muffled gunshots from inside the house, shortly before two distressed women knocked on the door. When they approached, the shooter emerged and fired at them as they tried to flee. He then returned inside the house.
Police discovered the two women deceased outside. Upon entering the home with a drone and a robot, officers located the bodies of the young boy and girl on the first floor, alongside two additional women and two young men found in the stairwell. The shooter was found on the second floor.
Out of sensitivity for the victims’ families, the chief refrained from detailing what officers encountered inside the house.
While discussing potential motives, Chief Lorah hinted that mental health issues might play a role in the tragedy. Investigators plan to talk to relatives and analyze the cell phones of the women who died outside.
Nicole and Debra Eller, friends of the victim’s family for over three decades, expressed disbelief at the situation. Nicole described the shooter as “a good guy” who had been struggling lately, while Debra reflected on the unimaginable nature of such an event, stating, “Oh my gosh, this is so upsetting. This should have never happened to her or the kids or anybody. How can you do that to your own grandchildren?”
The mayor of Erie, Daria Devlin, conveyed her condolences at a Saturday press conference, expressing how profoundly sorry she was for the affected families. She remarked, “What happened to you was horrific, and nothing anyone can say today will make this any easier… Our whole community is grieving with you, and we are here to support you.”
