Katie Douglas Responds to House Republicans’ Appeal for Caitlin Clark’s Protection

Former WNBA All-Star Katie Douglas has spoken out, highlighting the increasingly tough physicality that Caitlin Clark is facing on the court. She pointedly distinguished between what constitutes a foul and what is merely routine contact, suggesting that a change is necessary in how the league handles these situations. This comes on the heels of House Republicans urging the WNBA to step in and offer protection to Clark.

In another incident, Hilton Grand Vacations announced that they have terminated an employee who reportedly sent a racially charged message to Las Vegas Aces star Chelsea Gray. The company issued a statement confirming that the actions of the individual were in stark violation of their policies and values.

Gray had shared a screenshot of an Instagram direct message she allegedly received after a game against Clark and the Indiana Fever. This message purportedly included a racial slur aimed at her, alongside identifying information about the sender. She wrote, “People are acting like we’re just going to get along and have the audacity to tell us, as athletes, ‘shut up and dribble.'”

In that match, the Indiana Fever triumphed over the Aces with a score of 109-75, with Clark contributing 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Meanwhile, Gray is working her way back to being a full-time player after previously suffering a back injury.

The recent game intensified already heightened tensions among WNBA fans and players, especially after Clark was subjected to a cheap shot from Alyssa Thomas, who punched her in the throat in a prior matchup. This incident reignited discussions about the ongoing racial controversies concerning Clark’s prominence in the league. Thomas has reportedly also dealt with racial insults and threats following that incident.

Last week, a group of eleven Republican Congress members sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, raising concerns about the racially motivated hostility directed at Clark and questioning whether the physical aggression she’s encountering might also stem from racial bias.

The letter noted specific instances where Clark was checked in the lower back, poked in the eye, and punched in the throat, stating that these actions go beyond what would normally be considered regular physical play. It criticized the WNBA and its referees for failing to adequately address such unacceptable behavior and hold players accountable.

Furthermore, Engelbert reportedly canceled an interview on “The Dan Patrick Show” as the controversy surrounding Clark escalated, with Patrick alleging that this decision was influenced by the league’s public relations team.
