Man accused of starting fires in LA Palisades threatened to set his sister's house on fire before being taken into custody

Firefighter Accused of Starting Palisades Fire Made Disturbing Threats

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A firefighter, Jonathan Rinderknecht, is facing serious allegations following claims that he threatened to set his sister’s home ablaze and harm his brother-in-law while children were present, as reported by authorities.

Federal officials noted that Rinderknecht’s family was so alarmed by his threats that they decided to leave their home to protect themselves from him.

These unsettling details emerged during a court proceeding on Thursday for the 29-year-old, who is accused of sparking what has become the most costly wildfire in U.S. history.

Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) shared in court that they had been called to Rinderknecht’s residence in central Florida on two occasions last month. The first incident involved threats to ignite his sister’s house, and the second was linked to his threats against family members.

After the fire was attributed to him, Rinderknecht returned to Florida from Los Angeles to live with his sister and brother-in-law, where his behavior reportedly remained troubling.

Neighbors informed reporters that they had seen Rinderknecht at his family’s home, a three-bedroom residence valued at $500,000 located in a gated community near Orlando.

During the testimony, it was mentioned that two children were taken away from the home after Rinderknecht’s arrival because of worries regarding his declining mental health.

Additionally, he allegedly threatened his brother-in-law, leading his father to call law enforcement, who later found a firearm concealed within a stuffed animal. Rinderknecht claimed he made the threat in self-defense and insisted the gun was secured in a safe rather than hidden in a toy.
