Seattle Shooting Case: Man Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity

The man accused in the 2023 shooting that resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in Seattle has been declared not guilty by reason of insanity.

Cordell Goosby faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder for the death of 34-year-old Eina Kwon, who was shot while her husband, Sung Kwon, was also injured in the incident.

On June 13, 2023, Eina and Sung Kwon were employed at the Japanese restaurant Aburiya Bento House when they paused at a red light around 11:15 a.m.

Goosby reportedly ran up to the driver’s side of their white Tesla, gun still in hand, and opened fire.

Prosecutors noted in court documents, “He fired several rounds into the victim’s car, striking the person inside. Afterward, he fled the scene.” They emphasized that Goosby’s actions had devastating effects on families and communities.

Subsequently, law enforcement located Goosby, who raised his hands and exclaimed, “I did it! I did it!”

At the time, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell described the shooting, which took place in broad daylight, as an “unimaginable tragedy.”

Authorities highlighted that Goosby was not allowed to possess a firearm due to his previous criminal record in Illinois, and it’s believed he used a stolen gun during the shooting.

According to reports, a King County court found Goosby’s not guilty verdict by reason of insanity implies that he confessed to the crime and consented to being placed in a state psychiatric facility.

Both defense and prosecution experts assessed Goosby’s mental state and concluded that he was legally insane at the time of the incident, which the court acknowledged.

The agency further stated that Goosby’s future release will hinge on approval from various state and court authorities.
