Taxi Driver Murder Arrest
A man from New York has been apprehended after admitting to strangling a taxi driver over a fare dispute and disposing of the victim’s body near a reservoir, according to law enforcement officials.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Santos Vazquez Ramirez was arrested at his Pauling home on Friday, linked to the murder of Aurelio Junio Alves that occurred on December 1.
Authorities indicated that the 27-year-old suspect didn’t know the victim personally, although he had used his services at least once in the past.
According to police reports, Vazquez Ramirez was picked up by the 66-year-old Alves, but it seems a disagreement erupted between them, leading to the driver’s tragic death.
After the altercation, it is alleged that he dragged the driver’s body into nearby woods, where it was found floating in the Croton Falls Reservoir on the same day.
“He has driven in the past,” Sheriff Brian Hess mentioned during a press conference on Saturday. “The suspect stated that the reason for the dispute over the fare was a previous taxi ride.”
The murder suspect then reportedly fled in the victim’s black Toyota Sienna, leaving it at a Metro-North station in Pardee, just a short drive from Brewster.
Interestingly, as he was escorted to a police vehicle, the suspect, who appeared to show little remorse, smiled for the cameras, despite having a noticeable red mark on his cheek.
“This was a brutal and senseless act of violence against a dedicated individual who contributed to this community,” Hess remarked. “Mr. Alves, a father of four living in Danbury, Connecticut, absolutely did not deserve such a fate.”
The arrest came after what officials called “old-fashioned police work,” involving extensive video surveillance that examined countless trains, platforms, and street cameras to trace the suspect.
Junio Alves was fondly remembered via social media as a devoted family man.
“My uncle was a dedicated father, brother, uncle, and friend,” expressed his niece, Isabel Alvarado, on a GoFundMe page aimed to assist the family.
The message highlighted his strong ties in the community, stating, “As a local taxi driver, he built meaningful relationships with his passengers, who admired his kindness and dedication.” The fundraising page has raised over $8,500 out of its $12,000 goal.
Vazquez-Ramirez now faces charges of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.
