Man alleged to have stabbed two people shot by armed police in Merseyside

A man suspected of injuring two people in a stabbing was shot by armed police in Merseyside.

According to Merseyside police, they received calls about a man and a woman being attacked in the Truk Road area of Hughton, near Liverpool, around 4:25 PM on Wednesday.

When officers arrived, the suspect was shot and taken to the hospital for treatment. The victims were also hospitalized, and their conditions were reported as serious but stable.

Police have initiated an investigation to examine the circumstances in Knowsley, leading to road closures in the area.

Officers remain active at the scene, conducting house-to-house inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage.

The independent office for police conduct (IOPC) has been notified as part of standard procedures, and they have begun an independent investigation.

Colin Hardy, 54, who lives nearby, reported hearing gunshots and described a scene filled with “lots of screams.” He noted that after some quiet, police helicopters arrived, instructing residents to return to their homes.

A neighbor from Derna Road recounted hearing commotion on the street. Kelly Tambare, 36, expressed feeling “really shocked” upon witnessing the heavy police presence.

She commented, “I heard police sirens and went out. There were about eight police cars, and quite a scene in the streets. Officers were securing access to the area, and it was said that one neighbor had been stabbed.”

Tambare mentioned seeing ambulances and police helicopters, with officers advising residents of Dahna Road to stay inside.

Detective Superintendent Paul Speight stated, “We are in the early stages of our investigation, working to piece together what occurred. I want to reassure the public that Merseyside Police is dedicated to community safety.” He added that this appears to be an isolated incident and that all three individuals involved have received medical evaluation for various injuries.

An IOPC spokesperson confirmed, “We have started an investigation into the shooting by Merseyside police in Hughton.”
