Fatal Black Bear Incident in Florida
Authorities confirmed a tragic black bear attack in Jerome, Florida, on Friday, marking the state’s first recorded fatality from such an incident, as noted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the situation after a relative of the missing man reported concerns. The family mentioned possible signs of bear activity around their property, prompting the FWC to investigate the matter.
Upon arrival, officials discovered the body of 89-year-old Robert Marquell approximately 100 yards from his home.
Investigators made several key observations: (1) there was evidence suggesting a physical confrontation between a bear and a human near the residence; (2) a dog had been killed by a bear in close vicinity; (3) signs indicated that a bear had entered the home itself. The specific chain of events leading to the attack is still unclear. FWC guidelines recommend fatal measures when bears pose a threat based on documented situations like these.
The FWC proceeded to eliminate three large male bears, the heaviest weighing 434 pounds, and sought to capture a fourth bear, although only DNA evidence could be obtained from it. The remains of the bears were sent for further analysis.
Video evidence revealed FWC officials removing a black bear from a nearby state road.
Investigations revealed that one of the bears, weighing 263 pounds, had DNA evidence connecting it to Marquell’s remains, as well as to the deceased dog.
Reportedly, there are about 4,000 black bears in Florida. The incident follows at least two other bear encounters in the state within a week, including one where a woman in Sanford used a cookie bag to distract a bear while walking her dog.
