Three individuals were taken to the hospital following a stabbing incident in Winterthur, Switzerland, where the attacker reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar.”
On Thursday morning, a 31-year-old man, who is thought to be a Swiss citizen, was apprehended after multiple stabbings occurred near the Winterthur train station. Several people were harmed, resulting in three being hospitalized, two of whom have moderate injuries, while the third is in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that the victims, aged 28, 43, and 52, are all Swiss nationals, but no additional information was provided. The investigation is still ongoing. At this point, it’s unclear whether a motive has been established or if the incident will be labeled as terrorism by the Swiss government.
German media outlets in Switzerland have reported that witnesses and video evidence depict a bearded man wearing a casual black T-shirt, who was shouting “Allah Akbar” during the incident before his arrest. Footage shows him running in front of the station, where a teacher reportedly intervened, positioning herself between him and a group of students to keep them safe.
A witness at the station described hearing the suspect yelling “Allah Akbar” several times in an emotional manner and observed children fleeing. A taxi driver who was nearby praised the swift response of the police, who were present for patrols at the station. He recounted seeing the attacker try to stab a victim and remarked on the bravery of passersby in fighting back. He expressed concern about what might have occurred had the security forces not reacted so quickly.
In contrast, while Switzerland has largely sidestepped the wave of Islamist terrorism affecting Europe over the past two decades, Winterthur has seen rising concerns about Islamist activity. The city was home to a mosque that previously sparked controversy. In 2016, authorities arrested a Somali-born imam for making a death threat, and the mosque was linked to several young individuals who traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State, leading to its eventual closure.
This is a developing story, and more updates are expected.
