Man arrested after pedestrians hit by car in London’s West End | UK news

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pedestrian was hit by a car in London's West End in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Police said officers were called to Shaftesbury Street, Covent Garden, at 12:45am on Wednesday morning to reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the road and a collision.

Police said four pedestrians were taken to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries.

The driver, a 31-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police said they believe the suspect was “involved in an altercation at a nightclub before getting into a car and onto the sidewalk.”

It added, “It has been confirmed that this is an isolated incident that is not related to terrorism.”

Forensic investigators arrived at Shaftesbury Avenue. Tourists in Soho stopped to look at the police cordon after bloodstains were seen on the pavement opposite the Gielgud Theatre.

The cordon is located at Archer Street and Great Windmill Street, covering the Windmill Soho nightclub and other venues in the city centre.

Deputy Commissioner Stuart Cundey said: “Officers responded quickly to this call and, working closely with City of London Police, arrested the man within minutes.”

“Detectives are rapidly moving forward with investigations as part of this investigation.

“It is believed the suspects were involved in an altercation at a nightclub before getting into a car and driving onto the pavement.

“Some scenes still remain in that location today.

“This has been confirmed to be an isolated incident not related to terrorism.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
