Recent Subway Violence in NYC
Just a week after an incident involving a woman in a pink coat who strangled a teenage girl on a Brooklyn train, authorities reported another violent episode in the Bronx. This time, a would-be chain thief used a razor to slash a victim during the hectic Tuesday evening commute.
According to police and sources, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on a northbound Route 2 train past the Pelham Parkway station. The victim was conversing when an unknown man interrupted, leading to an argument.
During the altercation, the suspect slashed the victim with a razor while attempting to steal her chain, but he ultimately failed to take it.
Authorities shared that the suspect, who is thought to be in his 30s, escaped the scene following the attack.
In a separate incident last week, a 13-year-old girl was also assaulted by a woman on a Brooklyn train during morning rush hour. The assailant, wearing a pink coat, confronted the girl on the G train at Metropolitan Avenue around 7:50 a.m. on November 17. The attacker reportedly grabbed the girl by the throat, causing her to struggle to breathe.
Footage from surveillance cameras was later released by the NYPD, showing the aggressor fleeing the train. The girl was treated for a neck injury afterward.
The past week witnessed additional subway violence, including an incident where 28-year-old Tiquan Manassa slashed two men with a knife on the southbound platforms of the E and F trains at Union Turnpike Station in Kew Gardens on November 19. Moreover, on November 16, Aaron Nett, 33, allegedly pushed a bystander into a moving train in Harlem, resulting in serious injuries while attempting to break up a fight.
Despite these troubling events, recent NYPD data indicates a slight decrease in assaults on public transit this year. Reports show 513 serious assaults have been recorded, down from last year’s 517. Additionally, misdemeanor crimes fell from 1,392 to 1,310.
