Man Catches 884-Pound Bluefin Tuna to Set New Record in Texas

What a Catch!

A Houston angler made headlines in April after reeling in an impressive 884-pound bluefin tuna. Once certified, this catch will set a new Texas state record.

David Esslinger, the fisherman behind the enormous tuna, spent a challenging five hours wrestling with the fish, which was located about 160 miles off the coast of Galveston. The catch surpasses the previous Texas record of 876 pounds for bluefin tuna, which was set in 2021 when another large fish was caught.

In the realm of massive catches, the IGFA All-Tackle World Records list the largest bluefin tuna at a staggering 1,496 pounds, caught by angler Ken Fraser in 1979 off Nova Scotia.

Interestingly, Esslinger waited over 30 hours before finally landing this remarkable catch.

This story really makes me eager for summer vacations. I can picture myself fishing in peace, just me, my rod, and a serene canal—sounds delightful, right?

While I won’t be going after deep-sea giants like bluefin tuna, I do enjoy targeting some exotic species. Last year, my wife hooked a Peacock Bass, not to mention Blue Tilapia and Snakehead among others. Those big fish can be thrilling!

I’m definitely looking forward to those holidays. Best of luck to all the fellow anglers out there!
