Galveston police announced Friday that a suspect suspected of setting a house on fire and killing a woman in Texas has been arrested.

Courtney Allen Thompson, 20, of Galveston, was arrested on Friday, March 8, in connection with a Feb. 29 house fire that killed one woman, officials said in a press release. did.

Investigators classified the fire as arson and homicide.

Back on February 29, authorities reported that when the Galveston Fire Department responded, they found three people fleeing the burning structure and quickly got them safely out.

Authorities later found a fourth person, 55-year-old Renita Hawthorne, unconscious inside the home.

Hawthorne was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Trauma Center, where he later died from his injuries, officials said.

“I wish we could bring her back. It’s unbelievable right now,” Renita’s cousin Sharonda Hawthorne told Fox 26.

Fox 26 reported that Renita Hawthorne was in her one-story elevated home with her daughters and boyfriend when the fire broke out.

Thompson was booked into the Galveston County Jail on charges of capital murder and three counts of aggravated assault. Officials said additional charges against him are pending.

The aggravated murder charge carries a $700,000 bond, and each aggravated assault charge carries a $1 million bond.

Investigators are continuing to search for additional suspects.

The motive for the fire is still unknown.
