Florida Man Accused of Killing Toddler During Argument

A 21-year-old man in Florida is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting a 2-year-old boy in the head while the child was in his mother’s arms during a dispute, as detailed in an arrest report.

According to the report, witnesses said that Stephen Dodson Jr. was arguing with the boy’s mother late Sunday night outside an apartment complex in Jacksonville. It was noted that Dodson is the mother’s boyfriend.

Witnesses claimed that Dodson followed the mother into the house and entered the same room where the children were. The mother reported to police that Dodson locked the bedroom door, retrieved a gun from a closet, and fired while holding her son, Ahmari Robinson.

The shot resulted in a fatal injury, and the boy was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Dodson fleeing the scene and disposing of the firearm in a trash can. Law enforcement, including U.S. Marshals and a SWAT team, apprehended him on Monday at a nearby apartment complex.

Before police arrived, someone had taken the gun from the trash can and brought it back to the apartment, where it was later collected as evidence.

Dodson has been charged with several offenses including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. As of Tuesday, he was denied bail.

Records indicate that Dodson has a troubling criminal history, with previous arrests for robbery, domestic assault, and other charges.

The family’s grief was palpable outside of court. One family member expressed their pain and frustration, highlighting the threats they have received from others unaware of the situation.

Another relative emphasized their hurt, stating how the child “didn’t deserve anything like that.” A GoFundMe page has been established to help support the family.

The next court appearance for Dodson is scheduled for April 15.
