A man suspected of murdering his wife in California and fleeing to Peru with their three young children is now in custody.
According to Peruvian national police, Jocimer Cabrera Cornejo turned himself in at the Interpol headquarters in Lima. There are aggressive efforts to track down individuals who are subject to Interpol’s “red notices” and are wanted for extradition globally, as noted by Peruvian officials.
Authorities released a video where Cornejo is seen in handcuffs, dressed in an Interpol vest.
Cornejo stands accused of killing Sherla Lisbeth Cabrera. Some of her friends claimed that she had been in an abusive relationship and sought a divorce, which allegedly triggered a violent reaction from Cornejo.
The Montrose Search and Rescue team discovered an object near an embankment in the Angeles National Forest, later identified as Cabrera’s body, which had multiple stab wounds.
Search teams recalled seeing Cornejo fleeing from the couple’s apartment complex in Lancaster, suggesting a connection between the two incidents.
Cornejo is facing a murder charge, accused of using a knife as a weapon. If convicted, he could potentially receive a life sentence as outlined by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
“The allegations against this man are horrifying. We will do everything possible to ensure he is held accountable,” stated District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “Domestic violence harms our community and devastates families. We are dedicated to restoring stability for those affected.”
Fortunately, Cornejo’s three children were located safely in Peru and have been placed in protective custody.
