Man Claims to Be 49ers Player in $1.3 Million Romance Fraud, Authorities Report

A prosecutor has reported that a man allegedly used dating apps, fake financial accounts, and falsely claimed to be a player for the San Francisco 49ers to deceive women into investing in a non-existent relationship.

Daejon Labrayae Love, 35, and 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan are facing federal charges for wire fraud and conspiracy related to wire fraud. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon noted that 26 alleged victims have been identified, with these women collectively sending roughly $1.3 million to the accused.

The reported fraudulent activity began in February 2022 and concluded on August 24 when Love and Chan were apprehended.

Love allegedly connected with several women via dating apps and convinced them that they were in genuine romantic relationships. He not only claimed to be an NFL player but also positioned himself as a real estate investor eager to build both a future and wealth with the women.

Investigators assert he used social media to curate an image of a lavish lifestyle, sharing vacation pictures and manipulated bank statements to enhance his persona.

Chan allegedly played a supportive role, presenting himself as Love’s financial advisor to further legitimize the scheme. Prosecutors claimed Chan engaged in conversations with Love about investment opportunities and participated in FaceTime calls with some victims to showcase false earnings.

Victims were enticed with promises of substantial and swift returns for their investments. Love allegedly borrowed money from some women while encouraging others to take out personal loans when they were short on cash.

According to investigators, Love allegedly severed ties with women who either ran out of money to invest or began to question the legitimacy of the supposed investments. Prosecutors indicated that, of the 26 women, none received documentation or returns that indicated an investment account was ever created for them.

Authorities suspect the total number of victims might be even greater.

Both men were arrested at Boise Airport after Chan traveled from California to meet Love. Investigators revealed that Love was in Idaho to possibly meet more victims.
