A 36-year-old man was shot in the head and in critical condition after a heated argument on a crowded subway train approaching a station in Brooklyn, New York, Thursday night, police said at a news conference.
The shooting occurred around 4:45 p.m. after a 32-year-old man boarded a train at Nostrand Avenue Station, New York City Police Department Traffic Director Michael Kemper said.
As Kemper got into the car, he was approached by a 36-year-old man who was “described by multiple witnesses as being aggressive and provocative towards the 32-year-old man who had just gotten in the car.” That’s what it means.
Kemper said the two got into an argument that quickly turned into a physical altercation. The older man showed “either a knife or a razor blade” to a young man who had just gotten on board and put it down.
Kemper said the argument continued, but the altercation became physical again when the 36-year-old man “removed a firearm from his jacket” and began walking toward the younger man in a “threatening manner.” .
At that point, police believe a young man “pulled” a gun from the 36-year-old man and fired several shots at him as the train entered the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station.
Kemper said he didn’t think the two knew each other. He also said there were between 10 and 20 passengers on the train at the time and that there were several videos of the incident.
Kemper said there were police at the station who heard the gunshots and were able to respond quickly. The 36-year-old man was taken to the hospital, where he was in critical condition and undergoing surgery at the time of Thursday’s press conference.
Kemper said it was still “undecided” whether charges would be filed against the 32-year-old or whether his alleged actions would be considered self-defense. At the time of the press conference, police were interviewing the shooting suspect who was arrested at the scene.
