A driver tragically lost his life after crashing into a seaside cliff along Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County, California, plummeting as much as 500 feet.
The deceased, a 58-year-old man from Santa Rosa, crashed his vehicle near Greyhound State Beach. Officials from the California Highway Patrol have provided this information.
Authorities report that the man was behind the wheel of a black 2017 Honda Pilot when, for reasons still unknown, he veered off the road, struck a phone booth, and fell off the cliff into the ocean below.
Emergency crews arrived quickly, and lifeguards from two nearby state parks entered the water to assess the situation, locating both the vehicle and the driver.
CPR was administered, and a helicopter was dispatched to assist in the rescue effort.
Using a basket, the helicopter lifted the victim back to the highway, where an ambulance was ready on standby.
Officials indicated that although life-saving measures were attempted, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries.
It appears there were no other individuals in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Authorities are currently looking into whether drugs or alcohol might have been contributing factors.
Capt. Grant Boles from the CHP Santa Cruz District emphasized the importance of safe driving, advising others to adjust their speed according to road conditions, avoid distractions, buckle up, and never drive under the influence.
This accident recalls a prior incident earlier this year where a driver also fell 500 feet from a cliff near Big Sur. In that instance, the vehicle ran off the road at Hurricane Point, and the occupants were found deceased.
The sheriff’s search and rescue team, along with California Highway Patrol and Big Sur Fire personnel, discovered the vehicle situated among rocky cliffs more than 500 feet below the roadway.
