Over the weekend, a fatal incident occurred at an English wildlife park when a man entered a tiger enclosure and was fatally attacked by one of the animals.
According to South Yorkshire Police, they received a call at 1:35 p.m. on Saturday reporting that someone had breached the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster. Unfortunately, the tiger attacked him, causing critical injuries, and he died at the scene despite emergency efforts, as confirmed by police.
The identity of the victim remains undisclosed, but law enforcement has indicated that his family has been notified and is being supported by specially trained officers.
Reports from ITV News indicate that Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched two land ambulances, an air ambulance, and a doctor to the site.
Fortunately, the tiger was unharmed during the incident and remained in its enclosure. Police reassured the public that there was no ongoing risk, and the park was evacuated following the attack.
Videos of the attack began circulating online, prompting police to urge individuals to refrain from sharing them. These clips allegedly depict the man being clawed and grabbed by the tiger as onlookers watched in shock, as reported by the New York Post.
In response to the serious event, Yorkshire Wildlife Park stated that its emergency protocols were activated immediately. The park is cooperating with authorities to determine the details surrounding the incident and has closed its gates for the remainder of the weekend.
In a posted statement, the park emphasized, “The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority.” They also confirmed the park would remain closed the following day.
The tiger enclosure is part of the park’s Land of the Tiger exhibit, which spans two acres and was specifically designed for Amur tigers, having opened in 2011. This subspecies is currently endangered, with only about 500 left in the wild. Photos on their website showcase a raised walkway for visitors and fencing that allows the tigers to roam above ground.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park was established in 2009 and is located approximately 160 miles north of London.
It’s unclear how the man managed to bypass the barriers around the enclosure. Police officers remain on-site to conduct their investigation.
