Shooting in Washington, D.C. After Federal Police Announcement
A man was killed in a shooting in Washington, D.C. on Monday, just hours after President Donald Trump declared a federal takeover of the city’s police department.
The Metropolitan Police Department reported that the victim was discovered in the 1200 block of NW 12th Avenue near Logan Circle. Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A homicide detective is currently investigating the case.
This announcement from Trump included plans to place local police departments under the federal authority of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy. He mentioned revitalizing around 800 National Guard members to help restore “law, order, and public safety” in the city.
Interestingly, FBI Director Kash Patel expressed support for this action, saying that good police officers make a significant difference.
Meanwhile, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser referred to the federal takeover as “unsteady and unprecedented.” During a press conference, she stated, “This behavior is uncertain and unexpected, but given some past rhetoric, we can’t say we’re completely surprised. We want to assure DC residents that we will continue to lead our government in a way that makes you proud.”
The D.C. Home Rules Act allows for federal control of city police for 30 days. However, the City Council condemned this temporary measure as “a manufactured intrusion on local governments.” They noted that violent crime rates in the city are currently at a 30-year low and argued that the National Guard lacks the necessary training for public safety operations in D.C.
Additionally, they argued that calling in the National Guard seems unnecessary without a genuine crisis or emergency needing their intervention.
Data from local police indicates that while murder rates had been declining, recent years have seen an uptick not experienced since 2008.
