Mississippi Man Uncovers Civil War-Era Artifacts

A man from Mississippi stumbled upon a remarkable find on his property: dozens of artifacts from the Civil War, including around 200 cannonballs.

Harold Knight, while getting his land ready for commercial development along Route 45 in Boonville, discovered this hidden treasure.

“I found a shell on the ground here,” Knight shared with a local news outlet.

After mentioning his find, someone suggested that it might have originated from elsewhere.

While Knight continued working, he allowed others to explore the land with metal detectors.

Eventually, the search revealed a significant collection of artifacts, catching everyone off guard.

“They started finding a lot of metal detectors, so they invited a few more people to go out with their metal detectors, and that’s how they came up with about 200 metal detectors,” Knight explained.

The collection included various 160-year-old munitions like grape shot, canister shot, and case shot.

According to experts from the Booneville Railroad Museum, these projectiles might have landed on his property during two Civil War battles that occurred in July 1862—the Battle of Blackland and the Battle of Boonville.

Yet, more research is needed to pinpoint the origins of the shells.

Knight believes that there might still be more treasures hidden on his land.

“We still think there’s more here,” he said.
