Man from Redwood City taken into custody linked to deadly Caltrain platform stabbing

Authorities have apprehended a parolee with a history of violence in connection with a deadly stabbing on the Cultrain platform, according to local police and reports.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Jose Gomez Bustamante, was arrested on August 28 on murder charges at the Maguire Correctional Facility. He was taken into custody around 11:30 AM after a lengthy pursuit by investigators.

The victim, a local resident from San Mateo, was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries but later succumbed to them. The coroner’s office has named him Joseph Michael Carreiro. Details about the circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain unclear.

The investigation is being treated as a homicide, with assistance from the Redwood Police Department and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials are reaching out to the community for any evidence, such as photos or eyewitness accounts. They have assured the public that initial assessments indicate the attack was an isolated incident, thus posing no ongoing threats to safety.

Sheriff Christina Corpus commended the swift actions of law enforcement and expressed condolences for the victim’s family. “I’m thankful for the prompt response of our team in ensuring justice for the victim,” she mentioned, underscoring the dedication of the staff in safeguarding the community.

Bustamante’s history of violence isn’t new. Back in 2020, he reportedly attempted to stab an employee at a taqueria in Redwood, an incident described as unprovoked. He later pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and had been sentenced to six years in prison, a term which culminated in his release on parole just this past April. This was after receiving credits for good behavior and participating in treatment programs, despite a history of parole violations and prior offenses.
