An Illinois landlord has been sentenced to 53 years in prison after he murdered a six-year-old Muslim boy and seriously injured the boy’s mother in a hate crime linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Joseph Chuba, 73, was convicted of multiple charges in February, including murder and attempted murder, following the tragic incident that claimed Wadi Alfayoumi’s life and left his mother, Hanan Shaheen, severely hurt.
The attack took place in October 2023, seemingly fueled by Chuba’s animosity towards their Islamic faith and the situation between Israel and Hamas.
The trial featured heart-wrenching testimony from Shaheen, including her frantic 911 call. The jury took less than 90 minutes to reach a verdict, inspired in part by the disturbing photos and video evidence presented at the trial.
The family had been renting a room in Chuba’s home in Plainfield, approximately 40 miles from Chicago, when the attack unfolded.
During the proceedings, Shaheen described the horrifying moments when Chuba assaulted her before turning on her son, insisting they had to leave because they were Muslims. Prosecutors shared her 911 call and showcased police footage, while Chuba’s ex-wife, Mary, also testified about her distress over the escalating violence in the region.
According to police reports, Chuba attacked the boy with a belt knife, stabbing him 26 times and leaving the knife embedded in the child’s body. The gruesomeness of the crime scene led the judge to restrict views of certain evidence from the audience.
“He couldn’t escape,” noted a lawyer for the prosecution, emphasizing the brutality of the act.
After deliberating for about 90 minutes, the jurors returned their decision. Chuba now faces a sentence that could range from 20 to 60 years, or potentially life imprisonment, as Illinois does not impose the death penalty.
The brutal attack has sparked renewed concerns about anti-Muslim sentiment, particularly in communities with significant Palestinian populations. Wadi’s funeral drew a large turnout, and local officials have dedicated a park playground in his memory.
Chuba remained silent throughout the trial, and his defense attorney claimed there were flaws in the prosecution’s case. His official defense counsel has not provided comments to the media post-verdict.
Shaheen suffered over 12 stab wounds and required weeks to recover.
She noted that there hadn’t been any previous issues during the two years they lived in Chuba’s home, sharing communal spaces without conflict. However, following the outbreak of the war, Chuba made it clear that they were no longer welcome, eventually confronting and attacking her.
“He told me, ‘As a Muslim, you have to die,'” Shaheen recalled.
Police later found Chuba outside the house, covered in blood from the attack.
A separate lawsuit has been filed over the boy’s death, and the U.S. Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into federal hate crimes related to this case.
