Man Charged with Murder in Random Stabbing Incident
A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a woman in a typically peaceful South Florida neighborhood, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Kersten Francislas, who resides nearby, is accused of attacking a woman in her 70s as she walked her dog in Stuart’s Southwood area last Friday, Sheriff John Budensiek reported.
Before the attack, neighbors had alerted police about a man behaving suspiciously, going door-to-door and posing unusual questions.
“We received several calls from the Southwood community—a quiet, upscale area here in Martin County—regarding a suspicious male visiting multiple homes and engaging with residents,” Budensiek mentioned during a news briefing.
He added, “He was repeatedly asking where the new bank was, even though there aren’t any banks around here.”
Witnesses noted that the man appeared calm and non-threatening during these encounters, the sheriff stated.
Shortly after, police got further reports of this same man attacking a woman in a nearby cul-de-sac.
Investigators, who had already been en route to look into the suspicious activity, arrived to witness Francislas “aggressively stabbing” the victim on the ground.
“The suspect was on top of her, actively stabbing her,” Budensiek said.
A Good Samaritan tried to intervene but couldn’t stop the assault before deputies arrived, according to officials.
Upon being confronted by law enforcement, Francis immediately dropped the knife and surrendered.
The victim had sustained stab wounds to her upper body and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Martin South, where she later passed away.
“This was a violent, despicable murder,” remarked Budensiek.
Authorities noted that there is no known connection between Francis and the victim, nor is a clear motive evident.
“At this point, this appears to be a very violent and random act,” Budensiek said.
Francis was arrested at the scene and subsequently booked into the Martin County Jail. The knife involved in the attack was identified as a steak knife likely taken from a residence.
The sheriff’s office indicated that Francis has no prior criminal record, although deputies had responded to reports of him behaving oddly at his home in the past.
Budensiek praised the community for reporting the man’s unusual behavior, saying, “Residents did what they had to do; they sensed something was off and reached out to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.”
Details about the victim’s identity have not been made public.
