Florida Man Arrested for Mortgage Fraud, Displays Witty Doormat
A man from Florida was taken into custody on Tuesday after the local sheriff’s department executed a search warrant at his residence, prompted by his own doormat that cheekily read, “Come back with a warrant.”
Christopher Muzik, 57, allegedly posed as a “fake real estate investor” in Volusia County, according to reports. Law enforcement officials mentioned that he created fraudulent documents and falsely claimed ownership of several commercial properties in the area.
A sheriff’s deputy even snapped a picture of Muzik’s front door featuring the ironic doormat. The sheriff’s office remarked, “We returned with a warrant.”
After interviewing Muzik, detectives from the Financial Crimes Unit asserted that there was sufficient probable cause to conduct a search of his home, effectively complying with the request of the doormat.
Reports suggest that Muzik secured mortgages on these properties with plans to utilize the funds for purchasing and renting additional properties, thus repeating this cycle while collecting the rental income. However, he failed to pay back the loans, as stated by the sheriff’s office.
Muzik, who has a lengthy criminal history including ten prior convictions and two outstanding warrants from Maryland, was charged with organized fraud, grand theft exceeding $100,000, and forgery. He is currently being held on a bond of $225,000, according to the local corrections department.
Florida is often spotlighted for its unusual residents and their equally bizarre crimes. For instance, just earlier this month, a man identified as “Farmer Pete” was arrested for allegedly firing at three individuals during an argument about egg production from their chickens. And, in a rather strange incident from October, authorities discovered a repeat offender hiding illegal substances in a thermos flask concealed within his body, necessitating surgical removal.
