A man in Florida was taken into custody after a tense standoff with authorities, which stemmed from an incident involving a misdelivered Amazon package.
George Manuel Mandez, 57, found himself holed up in his Wilton Manors apartment on Thursday afternoon as police attempted to persuade him to surrender peacefully.
Surveillance footage from the Manor Grove Apartments captured the moment an Amazon delivery driver mistakenly dropped off a package at Mandez’s door. The driver, realizing the error after looking around, picked the package back up and went to deliver it to the right address—a mistake he later admitted.
Just moments after the delivery driver returned to the van, doorbell camera footage showed Mandez emerging from the apartment, allegedly holding what seemed to be a gun. He confronted the driver about the package.
According to the police report, Mandez brandished a “small black handgun” from his waistband, aiming it at the driver.
Following this, he retreated to his apartment, barricading himself inside. A SWAT team arrived and surrounded his residence for two hours, while negotiators tried to convince him to come out.
Eventually, Mandez permitted police to search his apartment, where they found a firearm, leading to his arrest.
Mandez faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was released from Broward County Jail after posting bond on Friday.
When approached by reporters, Mandez described the incident as a “total misunderstanding,” avoiding further elaboration.
Amazon representative Eileen Hurd confirmed to the Post that the driver had indeed delivered the package incorrectly and subsequently corrected the mistake by delivering it to the right location.
“Safety is our top priority,” Hurd stated. “Everyone is safe and secure following this incident and is cooperating with law enforcement as they continue to investigate.”
