Man in Houston taken into custody for reportedly shooting neighbor at guinea pig funeral

A Texas man, now a fugitive for more than a month, has been arrested following an incident where he allegedly fired a shot at his neighbor during a family funeral for a guinea pig.

John Martin Dixon, 46, was taken into custody on Monday after 18-year-old Emmanuel Menchaka was reportedly shot and subsequently passed away in the backyard of his home in Houston. This shooting has had a profound impact, placing the teenager on a difficult recovery path before he died.

Menchaka spent 17 days in intensive care after being shot while burying his guinea pig, as shared by the family head.

The incident occurred late at night on July 17, amidst what local reports suggest was a debate between Menchaka and Dixon, though the specific topic of their disagreement is still unclear.

Witnesses say Dixon drew a gun and shot Menchaka in the torso while the victim’s younger brother, Evan, was present.

When police were called to the scene shortly after the shooting, they confiscated Dixon’s firearm. The next day, Menchaka identified Dixon as the shooter during a photo lineup, according to court records.

Despite this identification, Dixon was not arrested for over a month.

It wasn’t until August 8 that charges were officially filed against him, but he failed to attend a court hearing on August 11.

Dixon subsequently landed on Texas’ most wanted fugitives list, with authorities offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to his capture, labeling him as “armed and dangerous.”

With a history of run-ins with the law that includes evading arrests and marijuana possession, Dixon was eventually apprehended on August 25, facing two counts of aggravated assault related to the shooting.

Menchaka’s mother expressed overwhelming distress at the impact of the shooting on her family, emphasizing that her children should never have had to endure such a traumatic event. She stressed the need for justice and pondered, “Why did this happen?”

The investigation is still ongoing, with efforts to unravel the intentions behind the shooting.

“We might never uncover the underlying motivation for this crime, but we’re continuously searching for answers. If we can ascertain the reasoning, we might be able to elevate the charges,” stated Harris County District Attorney Sam Teer.

Dixon is set to be transferred to Harris County Jail and is expected to appear in court this October.
