Man Arrested for Placing Incendiary Devices Near Maryland Fire Station
A man has been taken into custody following reports that he positioned incendiary devices near a fire station just outside Washington, D.C.
Slater Chaia, a resident of Capitol Heights, Maryland, faces charges including possession of destructive devices and materials intended for creating such devices, both of which are felonies. Additionally, he is charged with reckless endangerment.
Surveillance footage captured him walking onto the fire station grounds with two plastic bottles. He is seen placing one bottle on the ground near the flagpole and then adjusting its position a few feet away from his mailbox. After a brief moment, he returns to retrieve the second bottle, which he subsequently places inside his mailbox.
This incident occurred around 8 a.m. on August 13, and it appears there were earlier instances where Chaia allegedly placed similar devices near the fire station, specifically on June 15 and July 15, although those events were not documented on video.
In a somewhat unusual move, police reportedly shared images of the devices using a Tom and Jerry cartoon theme to seek assistance from the public.
The bottles were reported to contain harmful materials, raising concerns about their potential danger.
Authorities have expressed their belief that the fire department was deliberately targeted, though the motive remains unclear. “One of our youths got hurt due to this,” commented James McClairy, director of Homeland Security for Prince George’s County.
McClairy noted that while the initial devices were ineffective, the newer ones showed a troubling trend of becoming increasingly hazardous. He also emphasized, “The last device found could have caused serious injury if it had been activated.”
Chaia is currently being held without bond, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also looking into the matter.
