A New York Love Story That Didn’t Last Long
A love story in New York City fizzled out before it had a chance to take off. A man, known online as “Murray Hill Guy,” decided to cancel his first date after the woman texted him, revealing she needed to leave by 9:30 p.m. for a friend’s birthday celebration.
He described his decision as “dodging a bullet,” sharing the experience in a post that quickly started trending online. The reactions on social media were mixed. Some people viewed the woman’s message as a “red flag.” In the eyes of a few commenters, sending such a note right before the date indicated poor planning skills.
In his post, he shared a text where the woman expressed excitement for the date but added the time constraint. She wrote, “Hi, I’m looking forward to meeting you for drinks… just a heads up, I have a friend’s birthday party starting at 9:30 p.m., so I have to wrap it up by then! See you soon!”
There were those who speculated her intentions might not be pure. One commenter suggested she might only be using the date as a way to fill time before her real plans kicked off. Another voiced concern about her apparent lack of enthusiasm, suggesting that she viewed the date as something to endure rather than enjoy.
Despite this, many defended the woman, arguing that it was completely reasonable for her to have plans for the evening. One commenter remarked, “Why do you care? You set up drinks; you don’t have the right to monopolize her time.”
Some shared their thoughts on her approach, speculating that she might have been giving herself an exit strategy. If the date went well, she could take him along to the party; if not, she’d have a polite way to end things.
In an attempt to salvage the situation, the man asked if they could reschedule. The woman’s response was pointed: “Cancelling on someone 30 minutes beforehand is pretty rude! I spent time getting ready for this.” She further stated her belief that two hours was ample time to connect on a first date and mentioned that they might not be on the same wavelength. Ultimately, she declined to reschedule.
