Wild footage shows a man jumping over the bench and attacking a judge in a Las Vegas courtroom after a woman refused a suspended sentence during a sentencing hearing on Wednesday.
Deobra Redden, 30, a third-degree felony, was being sentenced by Judge Mary Kay Holthus in Clark County District Court after being found guilty of attempted assault with great bodily injury. KLAS reported.
Around 11 a.m., Redden's attorney asked Holthus to sentence his client to probation, but Holthus had other things in mind for the repeat offender.
“I think it's time for him to try something else because that background doesn't cut it for me,” she said.
Suddenly, Redden ran up to the bench, spread his arms and jumped, slamming the judge to the ground, according to footage obtained by the outlet.
An American flag and a Nevada state flag were toppled during the commotion. In the chaos, several other people can be seen struggling with Redden, shouting profanities at Horthus, the video shows.
Court officials tried to drag him away, but he escaped and tried to follow the judge back while she was still on the ground, video shows. He and another person are seen exchanging punches during a struggle.
“What the hell happened?” I hear someone shouting in the background.
“Where's Mary Kay? Is she okay?” The man asks when Redden will finally be handcuffed.
An alarm went off for several minutes, alerting others to the incident, KLAS said.
Officials told the media that Holthus suffered minor head injuries but was doing well. A marshal was also injured in the riot.
“We thank God that the judge is safe,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said in a statement. “We thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshals and law officers.
“Without them, this defendant displayed such violent behavior that the situation would have been much worse, and we are confident there will be consequences,” Wolfson said.
On April 23, Redden threatened to “break another man's kneecap” and “caused great bodily harm,” according to court documents.
Redden was ordered to undergo a competency test by another judge in May. Records show he was held in a state conduct facility until he was certified competent in October.
