Tragic Camping Incident in Arkansas
A Missouri man was found murdered at a campsite in Arkansas just two days after he shared a photo of a bear family that had wandered close to his tent.
The 60-year-old was camping at Sam’s Throne in the Ozark National Forest near Mount Judea when he stopped responding to messages from his family. After several days without contact, his son contacted the police.
When deputies arrived, they found his truck and campsite abandoned, indicating that something was seriously wrong.
“The campsite showed signs of disturbance, along with evidence of a struggle and injuries,” the sheriff’s office stated. There was also a trail leading from the campsite into the forest.
Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler noted that the man’s body was located a short distance away, bearing significant injuries.
However, he mentioned that they couldn’t definitively conclude that a bear was responsible for the death until the Arkansas Crime Institute completes an autopsy.
Investigators are collaborating with wildlife officials, hunters, and tracking dogs to locate the bear believed to be involved. “We know for sure that a bear was present in the area with the victim. The injuries are consistent with a bear attack,” he pointed out, calling it a rare incident.
Authorities suspect that the animal may have been a young male black bear, as evidenced by the photos sent to his family shortly before his death.
Wheeler cautioned the local community against hunting bears on their own. “We don’t want people thinking it’s open season on bears, as most will flee from humans. Still, it’s crucial to keep yourself and others safe,” he advised.
In ongoing investigations, Sam’s Throne campground is closed until further notice.
According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, bear attacks are incredibly rare in the state. However, just last month, a 72-year-old man tragically lost his life in an unprovoked bear attack, marking the first reported incident in 25 years.
The National Park Service indicates that bear attacks typically happen when an animal feels threatened or is protecting its young or food sources.
Wheeler mentioned that the investigation into this recent death is still in its early stages.
