China’s ‘Red Uncle’ Scandal Gains Attention
A man in China, known online as “Red Uncle,” has sparked considerable interest on social media. This individual, with the surname Jiao, has allegedly lured women and invited many straight men into sexual encounters, all while secretly filming these interactions.
Authorities in Nanjing have charged Jiao with “spreading obscene material.” Under Chinese law, sharing photos and videos of sexual activities online is prohibited, and filming such activities without consent may violate the limited privacy rights recognized by the Communist Party.
This case has exploded in popularity on Weibo, China’s microblogging platform, amassing over 200 million views under the hashtag #RedUncle. The situation has also drawn attention to cross-dressers on social media, with some dubbing Jiao “The Red Old Man.”
Interestingly, the Chinese government usually censors sensitive topics quickly, but they seem to be taking a different approach with the “Red Uncle” incident. There has been minimal censorship on Weibo, suggesting that they may not want to completely hide the story from the public eye.
Nanjing officials have disputed several claims about Jiao, including his age and the number of victims. While social media suggested he was 60 and had sexual encounters with 1,691 men, police assert he is actually 38 and that the number of victims is much lower. The Global Times noted that it is incorrect to believe a 60-year-old man from Nanjing with such a reputation exists.
Authorities have indicated that Jiao’s actions may pose public health risks. The Nanjing Health Department has urged anyone concerned about potential health issues to come in for testing.
Weibo users were somewhat surprised by the details, as it appears Jiao used makeup, wigs, and stylish Western attire to disguise himself. He allegedly managed to draw in victims who often brought food and cooking supplies to his sparsely furnished room.
It seems that Jiao was attempting to monetize these secretly recorded videos. Posts circulating on Weibo featured photos of nearly 100 men he reportedly filmed.
