Man leaps to his death from Fire Island Lighthouse in New York

A man tragically died after jumping from the Fire Island Lighthouse on Long Island on Friday afternoon, which coincided with the unofficial end of summer.

The Suffolk County Police Department reported that the man, whose identity remains unknown, fell from the observation deck of the historic lighthouse around 1:45 PM.

“Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Murder Squad are collaborating with the National Park Service to investigate this incident,” SCPD mentioned.

Authorities have reviewed footage showing the man as he approached the 167-year-old lighthouse, purchased a ticket, and then jumped off, as per NBC New York’s report.

This incident resulted in the temporary closure of Long Island’s tallest lighthouse, just as people were preparing for Labor Day weekend beach outings.

“The lighthouse will be closed until further notice,” said an official from the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Association, as confirmed on social media.

The landmark will be closed to the public on Saturday, but is expected to reopen on Sunday.

The Fire Island Lighthouse has been a notable feature of Long Island for over a century. It was first lit in 1858 and underwent renovations in 1891, adopting its signature black and white stripes of today.

Standing at 168 feet, visitors can supposedly see the New York City skyline from the top.

Interestingly, this incident occurred just days after a North Carolina pastor drowned approximately 2.5 miles away at Sailor Haven. Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, was pulled under by a strong rip current while swimming on August 23rd.

Reports suggest that his family was enjoying a day at the beach when the current dragged him away. Lifeguards managed to rescue him, but he was later pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital.
