A 30-year-old man was randomly slashed in the neck near the Astor Place Cube on Thursday afternoon, with the assailant still at large.
Police say the victim was slashed in the back of the neck at approximately 5:22 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Lafayette Square and Cooper Avenue.
He was taken by ambulance to hospital where he is in a stable condition.
Police said the suspect, described as a man wearing a brown jacket, black gloves, a blue shirt and blue jeans, fled eastbound toward St. Marks Place.
As of Friday morning, the suspect remained at large.
Witnesses said the stabbing happened completely out of nowhere.
“There was nothing right before. No, there was no argument. It just suddenly erupted.” Witness Michael Picardi told ABC7..
“Normal. People were inside eating and literally within 30 seconds they turned around and heard a commotion and saw a man on the floor holding his neck and there was blood everywhere. He was bent over, shirtless and holding the back of his neck. It was a big pool of blood,” he added.
Mr Picardi said the victim removed his own shirt as blood was streaming from the horrific wound.
After the victim was taken to the hospital, the FDNY arrived and hosed down any evidence left on the sidewalk.
