Virginia Lawmakers Respond to Death Threats Amid Political Tensions

Less than a week after a significant political incident, lawmakers in Virginia are addressing a series of alarming death threats related to reelection campaigns. The atmosphere is charged, and remarks aimed at Charlie Kirk have intensified.

Del. Geary Higgins, a Republican from Lovettsville, confirmed a serious threat he received. He stated he was sent a message indicating someone would commit violence against lawmakers at an upcoming rally. “Let me be clear: violence has no place in our political discourse,” Higgins asserted. He emphasized that he wouldn’t allow himself to be silenced or intimidated.

Higgins had previously shared his discontent over racist signs held by activists at an Arlington County Board of Education rally, which featured Lt. Col. Winsome Earl Sears. One sign, in particular, drew widespread outrage for its divisive message.

Suspect Patrick Murphy allegedly sent a threatening text to Higgins following the rally, telling him to “f—off” and including a chilling message about shooting him at a future public event.

Higgins expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by Loudoun law enforcement in arresting the suspect. He expressed hope that everyone would stay vigilant in light of rising political violence. “Sadly, this reflects the troubling narrative we’ve seen unfold over recent years,” he noted, voicing concern over accusations directed at him by his Democratic rivals regarding his political record.

In a broader context, Virginia leaders recently condemned the racist signs aimed at Winsome Earle Sears, a notable figure as the state’s first black female governor. The messages have sparked outrage across political lines.

Higgins also mentioned derogatory comments made by John McAuliffe concerning his character and political stances. He warned that inflammatory language used against political adversaries could lead to dangerous consequences. Higgins has experienced severe backlash during political sessions, with opponents labeling him as a “con man” among other things.

Fox News Digital reached out to McAuliffe’s campaign. In a recent statement, he condemned political violence, asserting that it has no place in democracy. His office expressed appreciation for Higgins’ safety and acknowledged the prompt work of law enforcement.

Murphy was taken into custody earlier this month, following a police report stemming from concerns over the threats made to Higgins.

Ultimately, the tensions in Virginia serve as a reflection of the increasingly polarized political climate, where fear and anger fuel actions and reactions, often leading to unsettling threats.
