Virginia City Councilman Set on Fire

In a shocking event in Danville, Virginia, a city councilman is recovering after being attacked at his workplace around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The police have confirmed that the suspect is facing charges of attempted murder.

Republican Councilman J. Lee Vogler sustained injuries when a man confronted him in a business area and allegedly threw gasoline on him before igniting it. Witnesses reported that after the initial confrontation, both men exited the building, at which point the suspect set Vogler on fire and escaped.

Emergency services were quick to respond. Vogler received treatment from the Danville Fire Station and the Danville Life Saving Crew before being airlifted to a local hospital. Details regarding the severity of his injuries have not been released.

Authorities apprehended the suspect, 29-year-old Shot Michael Buck Hayes, just a few blocks from the scene. Investigators indicated that Hayes and Vogler had a preexisting relationship, and the conflict appeared to be of a personal nature.

The Virginia Young Republican Federation expressed their shock in a statement, calling the act brutal and urging for prayers for Vogler and his family. They emphasized the importance of resolving political and personal disputes without resorting to violence.

Business owner Andrew Brooks reported on Facebook about the incident, noting that the suspect was carrying a five-gallon bucket of flammable liquid. Brooks indicated that Vogler was “waking up and talking” as he was taken to receive specialized burn treatment.

Charges against Hayes include first-degree attempted murder and malicious wounding. Many, including the chairman of the Virginia Democrats and former U.S. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, have condemned the attack. Virginia’s Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin also shared his thoughts, wishing for a swift recovery for Vogler and peaceful healing for the community.
