Man shoots at armed suspected intruder outside neighbor's house: 'We've always warned people not to cause trouble here'

Incident in Grover, North Carolina

Law enforcement was called to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office in Grover, North Carolina, regarding a suspicious individual shortly before 11 p.m. on Monday.

A resident in the 100 block of Mallard Drive noticed a light on in a nearby home under renovation and decided to step outside to investigate.

Knowing better than to activate the lights in her own house due to her concerns, she suspected a potential break-in.

Shortly thereafter, she spotted a man in a yellow sweatshirt carrying an object. When she confronted him, he reacted by firing shots in her direction, though, fortunately, she wasn’t hit and promptly called 911.

Officials noted that the suspect had initially attempted to enter the house by breaking a window, disregarding verbal warnings from the homeowner. The homeowner then reportedly approached with a firearm.

A nearby neighbor, hearing the gunfire, ventured outside to investigate. Upon encountering the suspect, the neighbor believed the man was firing at him and returned fire.

The suspect then fled the scene in an Audi, as reported by the authorities.

Clayton Campbell, a resident on Mallard Drive, expressed, “We’ve always warned people not to mess around here. We will do what we must to protect our homes.” He added that those who intended to cause trouble quickly realized they weren’t joking.

The sheriff’s office has yet to confirm any injuries from the incident, and the investigation is still in progress.

Campbell remarked, “Last night could have turned out a lot worse. The important thing is that no one was hurt.” The search for the individuals in the Audi is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 704-484-4822 or Crime Stoppers at 704-481-8477. Authorities emphasized that all tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous.
