Alabama Cheerleader Tragically Killed in Shooting

An Alabama man reported being shot ten times while attempting to shield his friend from an assailant who fatally shot high school cheerleader Kimber Mills.

Mills, just 18 years old, was killed early Sunday morning at a location known as The Pit in Pinson, Alabama. Law enforcement stated that around 12:24 a.m., the suspect, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, arrived and engaged in a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. The shooting reportedly took place during a bonfire event.

Whitehead has since been charged with three counts of attempted murder, and his bail has been set at $180,000.

Kimber’s sister, Ashley Mills, announced on Facebook that Kimber passed away Wednesday night. She was a senior at Cleveland High School, where she participated in cheerleading and track.

Ashley shared, “Our sweet little sister went to be with the Lord last night at 7:08 p.m.! She had the largest Honor Walk gathering the doctor has ever seen! She was and is loved by so many. We will miss Kimber!”

She added, “Kimber was caught in the crossfire,” a heart-wrenching point underscoring the chaos of that night.

Silas McKay, 21, who was also injured, reported that he was shot ten times in various parts of his body while trying to protect friends, including Kimber. He is expected to recover, possibly being discharged from the hospital soon.

“She’s like a sister to me,” McKay expressed. “She did everything she could. I wish I could have done more.”

He recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, revealing that the suspect had initiated a conversation with Kimber, which then led to a physical altercation.

McKay stated, “My ex-girlfriend came up to me at a party and said she was trying to do something to a girl named Kimber. My buddy and I found him and started fighting, but then he pulled out a gun and started shooting.”

On Sunday, McKay mentioned visiting Kimber in the hospital, where she held his hand and expressed her affection.

Kimber had aspirations of attending the University of Alabama by 2026, with dreams of becoming a nurse. The devastation surrounding her death is profound, illustrating the fragility of life.

Ashley Mills explained that Kimber’s injuries were too severe, and preparations were being made for organ donation, reflecting Kimber’s wishes. “She was taking a brave step,” Ashley noted, sharing the painful dilemma of honoring Kimber’s wishes while grappling with the trauma.

Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush disclosed that Kimber suffered gunshot wounds to her head and leg and was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Riley Silbo, a friend of Kimber’s, conveyed to Fox News Digital, “I would rather be known for her upbeat personality and big smile than for her tragedy.” She added that Kimber brought joy to many, describing her as a bright light in countless lives.
