Knife Attack on American Tourists in Dresden

On Sunday, American tourists were seriously injured during a knife attack while on a streetcar in Dresden, Germany. This incident occurred after they intervened to protect female passengers from harassment.

A 21-year-old man suffered severe facial injuries after being assaulted by two male assailants shortly after midnight near the Golden Rider Stop. Thankfully, the American citizens have been hospitalized but their conditions are not considered life-threatening, according to reports.

The situation escalated when the American men stepped in between a group of harassers and the women on the tram. One of the attackers, identified as a Syrian national named Majd A., began hitting the tourists. The other assailant left the streetcar and returned armed with a knife, which he used to slash the man’s face.

While both attackers initially fled, police later detained a group of Syrian migrants. However, the man with the knife has not been captured yet.

Majd A. holds permanent residency in Germany and had a history of criminal behavior, including assault and theft. Still, he and other detained Syrians were released following a decision by the prosecutor’s office, which stated there wasn’t enough evidence for prolonged detention. The prosecutor mentioned that the knife attack could not be directly linked to them.

This incident has sparked renewed discussions about Germany’s immigration policy, particularly the effects of the open border policy implemented during Angela Merkel’s tenure. Criticism of this approach has intensified, especially as public safety concerns continue to arise.

Member of the European Parliament Peter Bystroń, from the AFD Party, commented that the attack highlights the issues stemming from Merkel’s policies, pointing out that such incidents are becoming increasingly common.
