Man taken into custody following reported anti-Muslim assaults that left 5 injured in Scotland

Investigation Underway After Rampage in Edinburgh

Authorities specializing in counter-terrorism are looking into a violent incident in Scotland where five men were hurt. This began with what seemed to be an anti-Muslim attack near a mosque in Edinburgh, right before 9 PM on Friday.

The attacker, a 36-year-old man from Scotland, reportedly injured two individuals and also targeted three others in different locations throughout the city. Thankfully, the victims, aged between 22 and 39, suffered no life-threatening injuries, though three were taken to a hospital.

There’s more to this unsettling story. Reports indicate the suspect also vandalized a car at a gas station—smashed its window, and was found with an axe inside. Additionally, security footage captured him allegedly attacking people with weapons near a pizza shop, while social media videos seemed to show similar chaos erupting in other city areas.

According to Police Scotland, they responded to numerous reports of fast-moving incidents in Edinburgh and arrested the man around 9:30 PM local time. Public safety, they emphasized, was their primary concern.

Assistant Detective Constable Catriona Payton expressed her shock at the incident, stating that their immediate thoughts are with the injured and affected individuals. She further remarked on the need to send a strong message against racism and faith-based hate in Scotland, highlighting the importance of community unity.

Interestingly, upon his arrest, the suspect reportedly told officers that he felt he was “protecting the country.” Payton pointed out that extensive investigations are ongoing to fully understand the situation, facilitated by the Counter-Terrorism Police and aligned with governmental directives.

The Islamic Council of Britain has condemned this attack, noting that the community is understandably feeling anxious. They connected this incident to a recent racially charged event in Belfast, emphasizing that such actions stem from harmful political narratives that target entire groups. They urged their community members to stay alert, support one another, and report any incidents of Islamophobic hate to the proper authorities.
