Alabama Man Arrested for Threats Against Synagogues

A man has been taken into custody after being accused of threatening synagogues in Alabama and nearby states. The suspect, Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker, 33, from Needham, Alabama, was reportedly found with a suitcase packed with ammunition and bulletproof vests.

Authorities identified Shoemaker on Tuesday following what they described as a “credible threat of violence.” The Clark County, Alabama Sheriff’s Office shared the news of his arrest through a Facebook post.

“A potential act of violence was averted last night,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The investigation involved various agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the First Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. The Special Response Team secured a search warrant and examined Shoemaker’s residence.

“The suspect was apprehended with a suitcase containing weapons, ammunition, bulletproof vests, and other materials linked to the violent plot,” authorities reported. “Further investigation indicated that he had no plans to be captured and may have considered attacks on public figures.”

“We collaborated to prevent what could have been a mass shooting or a similar tragedy. People often wonder how such events could be avoided,” said Sheriff Dwayne Smith. “This is a success that shows what can happen when agencies work in unison.”

The Jewish Federation of Birmingham commented that, at this time, there is “no credible threat to our community.”

Shoemaker faces local charges for resisting arrest and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. The investigation is ongoing, and “numerous federal agencies” are involved, hinting that multiple federal charges could still be filed.
