Portland Man Accused of Violent Threats Against Law Enforcement
A man from Portland is facing serious accusations after allegedly threatening a law enforcement officer and making violent remarks about his wife, as reported by the FBI on Monday.
John Paul Cupp, 45, has been charged for threatening a federal law enforcement officer at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland. According to court documents, Cupp verbally attacked law enforcement officials who were monitoring a crowd on October 14.
He allegedly shouted threats, which included intentions to kill officers, sexually assault his wife, and harm his children. The FBI highlighted these claims in their filings.
On November 3, Cupp shared a video online reiterating threats against a federal employee and implied danger towards his wife. The following weeks saw him continuing to post violent threats directed at police officers and their families.
The FBI noted that Cupp is an active online creator, frequently sharing incendiary rhetoric, calls to violence against the United States, and anti-Semitic statements.
FBI Director Kash Patel remarked on the Bureau’s commitment to tackling extremism, stating, “If you threaten to kill a law enforcement officer or harm their family, you face significant federal charges.”
Patel emphasized that the FBI will use every tool available to identify and eliminate violent extremists from communities.
Scott E. Bradford, the U.S. Attorney for Oregon, condemned the threats made against law enforcement, declaring them “unacceptable.” He reiterated that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is dedicated to holding those who intimidate public protectors accountable.
Matt Torres, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Portland, added that such threats have “zero place in our community.” He stated that attempts to intimidate individuals committed to safeguarding the public undermine overall safety.
In summary, Cupp’s situation sheds light on serious issues surrounding threats to law enforcement, emphasizing the resolve of federal authorities to address this sort of extremism. The FBI, along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, is poised to take action against such behaviors to ensure the protection of communities.
